I have been getting ready for my upcoming show. A small exhibition of my new work will open at 4 Ravens Gallery in Missoula on First Friday August 3 and run through August 25. This exhibit, ELEMENTAL, explores how natural forms interact with each other―creating new forms within forms. The work includes a grizzly bear head sculpture and a mask made of bark and fine art photographs.
The grizzly bear head sculpture Alnus Ursus, (alder, bear) is 18.5” x 17” x 8”).

Thanks to Chris Autio for his photography skills capturing the feel of this bear.

In sculpture, I sought to express the power of the bear through the integrity and wildness infused in the bark by the elements that shaped it.
I found the alder bark I used in this piece in October 2015. It looked like it had been on the ground for many years. It was a big alder tree―probably the biggest I have ever seen. My foot in this photograph gives a sense of how big around it was. I knew eventually the bark would tell me what it wanted to be and it became this bear.
If you are in Missoula, on First Friday, August 3, I hope you can stop by 4 Ravens Gallery. I would love to see you or meet you.
