Walking with My Camera: Mountain Snow, Solstice, Weathered Wood

Mission Mountains with burned trees in the foreground (Firestone Flats Fire, 2013)

hibernal solstice —

the long dark —

and now the lengthening of days

We have been getting snow in the mountains but very little at lower elevations. This morning the darkness felt close. To be warm inside yet held within the winter darkness is a feeling I treasure as I welcome the slow movement toward more light.

I am preparing to take work to Artists on Main in Ennis, Montana in early January.

Icy walking paths are meditations to stay connected to the earth with my studded Icebugs and walking poles. The more intense colors of spring, summer and fall are gone and subtle winter hues help me notice the dynamic lines in weathered wood.
